Industrial plant services like asset management, plant revision management, and knowledge based maintenance pose challenges, which require the use of appropriate service information systems (SIS). Explicit knowledge of these challenges allows the evaluation of SIS, which can help suppliers to identify future requirements and objectify potential for innovation. This article describes the prototypical challenge based evaluation of a large integrated plant asset and field device management system. During evaluation the problem was disclosed, that the classification methodology is ambiguous. Therefore a solution, a reference model for SIS, is proposed, which maps generic components of SIS to challenges, thereby offering an abstract structure used to evaluate tools in a more objective and easy-to-use way.
